Light and Color: Using Light’s Energy
Clip: Special | 1m 4sVideo has Closed Captions
How do plants use sunlight to make their own food?
We use light for more than just to see. We can use light’s energy to make electricity, clean water, even dry our clothes. Plants use sunlight to make food.

Science Trek
Science Trek is a place where parents, kids, and educators can watch short, educational videos on a variety of science topics. Every Monday Science Trek releases a new video that introduces children to math, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) career potentials in a fun, informative way.(Science Trek music) JOAN CARTAN-HANSEN, HOST: Light may have many colors but more importantly, Light has energy.
And we use that energy in different ways.
We use light waves to generate electricity.
Solar panels are made of small PV or photovoltaic cells or a similar technology.
When sunlight hits these cells, the energy in the light waves creates electrical changes in the PV cells.
And that causes electricity to flow into the power grid or into a battery.
Solar energy can be used to heat water.
We can even use sunlight to dry our clothes.
It saves you money and reduces our carbon footprint.
Plants use sunlight's energy too.
It is a process called photosynthesis.
Inside plant cells are pigments called chlorophyll.
Plants use chlorophyll to convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into food.
In the process, plants release oxygen back into the air for the rest of us to breathe.
We all need light's energy to grow and thrive.
