care of us we need to take care of them I have an idea let's do some stretching by pretending to be what plants need to grow follow along with me stand up everyone so let's do our stretches like the sun Put Your Hands Up by your head stretch your fingers wide push your elbows back and your chest out be the warm sun shining bright shine up to the sky shine shine shine stretch out your wrist look down oh look down on the earth and the plants now let's look over to the side stretch stretch stretch good stretching stretch all the way over and now look up to the sky again and look down oh we are just spectacularly shining and spectacularly Sunny good job so let's stretch out our arms and our wrists okay put one arm up and one arm down and then we're going to we're going to switch we're going soon see you soon bye come on Kid Vision kids it's time for a kid vision [Music] mission welcome to Fairchild tropical botanic Garden this is a really special place because we grow many different plants from all over the world wow we really rely on plants to live for food so we eat them they're really great at giving us the air that we breathe and they're also very beautiful so we can use them like decoration and use them in our everyday lives Kid Vision kids do you realize how many different things plants do for us every day plants are important for people and animals they make our lives better and many ways for example by giving us shade and shelter plants are truly amazing do you study plants here oh yes so the study of plants is called botney and somebody who studies plants is called a bnst oh that's very interesting what kind of plants do you have here in your garden here we have a lot of plants that are edible so these are plants that we can eat wonderful we have lots of yummy stuff growing what I was looking at over here are some peppers these are really pretty in their orange orange we have some yellow ones over here and sometimes if they're really spicy they can be a bright red color and you grow them right here yes right here at the Garden what do all plants need to survive you need three really important things like the sunlight of course water when it rains and soil so the plants have a place to sit here in the garden we have so many beautiful plants I want to show you some that are big and pretty like orchids and some that are very delicious like the cacao tree wow I'm excited me too follow me let's check them out let's [Music] go this plant right here is called the caca tree it's super special because this is where we get chocolate from chocolate so when this plant it grows it has a really teeny tiny flower that grows on the trunk oh it's so sweet and then as that continues to grow it'll create a seed pod this is where we actually make the chocolate from so inside there are seeds we'll open it up and we'll add different ingredients like milk and sugar to make chocolate that's great so you have to start with a tree in order to make chocolate yes kind of like the fruit of this caca tree I see one up here it's kind of like a an orange yellow yeah so when they're fresh they're that orange yellow color and then when they get dried up they'll turn into this brown color all right so now I showed you the cacao tree which is really yummy and something we can eat want to show you this other tree over here which is very useful in a different way great follow me so right behind us over here is a plant called bamboo it grows super super fast and is a really strong building material and some people also eat something called bamboo choots so this tree serves two purposes wow you can use plants for so many [Music] things wow there are so many different types of very cool plants here at Fairchild Gardens what are you going to plant at [Music] home wow shiny that is a great idea it's a beautiful plant oh orchids are so beautiful let's go learn more about them hi Nicole thank you for meeting us here hi Miss penny I'm going to show you something very special at Fairchild today we have a vanilla or kid that's growing up this tree and it is the very first time that it has ever bloomed at fa child we're so lucky so if you look up there you can see the yellow flower that's sort of drooping down and then you can see a couple other little things sticking out and those are going to be the new flowers that are going to emerge in the next couple of days and so a vanilla Orchid does vanilla come from vanilla orchids it does did you know that when you are eating ice cream do you know what part of the orchid plant you are actually eating no it's the Orchid seeds which are really really tiny do you want to go to the lab and look at some Orchid seeds underneath the microscope I would would you like to go yes [Music] yes welcome to the million Orchid project lab this is where we do all of our research on orchids in here why are these orchids important so we're working with species of orchids that are rare and endangered to South Florida and so these are all species that you used to be able to find all over the habitats of South Florida and so we are trying to put them back out as they naturally used to occur bists like Nicole and others in the million Orchid project team are working hard to save and protect orchids orchids that are in danger of disappearing in this lab they are learning how to help grow and keep them healthy to plant 1 million orchids back into nature all right so I thought that we would look at some Orchid seeds over here underneath the microscope and the reason that we need to use a microscope to look at Orchid seeds see that white dust in there those are millions and millions of orchid seeds Orchid seeds are some of the tiniest in all of the plants so the microscope allows us to look at really tiny structures um and make them bigger so it's kind of like a magnifying glass and we have like a super magnifying glass yeah so remember the Orchid fruit has the seeds inside and there's millions of seeds inside each fruit of an orchid so take a look and you can look at what they look like underneath the [Music] microscope kids plants are extremely important to all animals on Earth we need them to survive they provide clean air food shelter and well-being so we need to bring plants with us anywhere we go even when we travel into outer space what we're doing here is something called our growing beyond Earth Project which is in partnership with NASA so we're working with them to figure out how to grow plants on the International Space Station so that's up in on our space right we're trying to grow plants that the astronauts can eat in outer space this is called a growth chamber and it's kind of like a little Greenhouse so it's supposed to be like a little mini Earth inside of a box that the astronauts can have up on the space station on the space station station you don't have the same amount of sunlight like we do have here on Earth we have these LED lights up at the top so this is kind of like the sunlight that helps the plants grow upwards we have this kind of dirt and um Sandy mixture which is like soil where the plants can sit like they did in the garden exactly like in the ground and then instead of watering the plants um kind of like with a hose for example we have a lot of the water in this pool in the bottom so that way the plants can just drink it up that way then what the astronauts can do is just open this up and they can Harvest or pull out whatever they want to eat close it back up and let the plant keep growing fantastic what type of plants are you growing for a space the types of plants that we are growing are ones that are edible so these are ones that we can eat and every year we do different kinds of plants so here we have beans it looks like we have some herbs like basil down here so just think about it you're up in space for maybe a few months or even a year at a time they don't have grocery stores up there so it's really helpful to do this project so we can have fresh food for the astronauts to eat how will you get them from here to space that's a great question so we don't really send these up to space we will send the seeds so we do different tests here on Earth to figure out which plants work best in this growth chamber and then the best ones that we like a lot we'll send them over to NASA and they'll send them to the astronauts and then they have the same same growth chamber um on their space station and then they'll be growing them from seed up there wow just think astronauts might be eating these same type of plants we use plants like we've been talking about almost every single day and so many different types of ways so we're just trying to figure out how we can use them in the best way thank you so much for teaching us all about plants and about botney and botanist we've learned so much today I'm so glad it was a pleasure having you here plants are super important because we rely on them so much so it's our job to take care of them I can't wait to start my own garden definitely and we hope to see you here at the Garden soon bye [Music] wow that was a great field trip K live they are so important that we even are going to grow them in space I know we learned a lot of new words today too let's go to the Kid Vision classroom and review some of them put on your thinking caps it's time to learn a new word botanist a botanist is a plant scientist they are scientists that study plants they conduct research to learn all about plants what was that word Bess good job plants the plant kingdom includes all living things things that are not animals a plant is a living thing that has a stem leaves and Roots what was that word plant good job Orchid an orchid is a beautiful plant with brightly colored flowers of unusual shapes and sizes orchids can live in trees what was that word Orchid good job edible plants edible plants are plants that people can eat safely without getting sick the most common edible part of a plant is the fruit what was that word edible plants good [Music] job Kid Vision kids plants are fascinating they have so many different parts and each part serves a different purpose to help the plant grow and live just like the bnst use a microscope to take a closer look at plants we're going to use a magnifying glass I know Kid Vision kids do you know the parts of a plant yes let's play a game I'm going to call it name this plant part and I'll give you a description of the part and you tell me what it is are you ready yes okay H this plant part of absorbs water and minerals from the soil and anchors the plant to the ground do you know what it is roots That's right The Roots this plant part is strong it holds up the plant and it lets the water and nutrients from the roots flow up to the leaves do you know what it is stem that's right it's the stem this next Plant part collects sunlight and makes food for the plant most are green do you know what it is leaves that's right it's the leaves and all the leaves of plants look a little bit different ooh this next Plant part is one of my favorites it makes the seeds and the fruit do you know what it is flowers that's right the flowers this part of the plant protects the seeds and helps them get moved from place to place by sometimes an animal do you know what it is food that's right the fruits animals including humans like to eat fruit because most of them are very sweet way to go Kid Vision kids I'm rooting for you we have a lot more to learn about plants Kid Vision kids did you know that fruits and vegetables come from plants and trees let's find out more about it let's go to a farmer market are you ready for another K Mission this is the market where everybody comes to buy their fruits and vegetables that we grow wow it looks like a rainbow in here look at all the colors would you like to go shopping yes you want to do some shopping yes oh yes we'd love to than great follow me [Music] [Music] wow look at the beautiful fruit and vegetables that we got from our our market today what do you see on this table what does this remind of you of what are the colors remind you a rainbow a rainbow and look they're in Rainbow order let's say the names and the colors of the rainbow are you ready red orange yellow green blue purple all of the colors of the rainbow isn't it interesting that nature grows the colors of the rainbow for us to eat it's like magic it's a wonderful thing and I wonder which of these are fruits and which are vegetables how do we tell the difference between a fruit and a vegetable well fruits carry their seeds with them or on them and vegetables they flower or root or are part of the plant why don't we cut up some of these fruits and vegetables and see if we can find the seeds what fruit or vegetable should we start with lemon a lemon I wonder if this is a fruit or a vegetable let's [Music] see do you see a seed yes so lemons are fruit fruits very [Music] good strawberries are very tricky where are the seeds on the strawberry on the out on the outside they're being super tricky they're hiding their seeds right in front of our face but there still fruit there's still fruit now let's see which one do you think is a vegetable that we can cut carrots all right let's see I don't see any seeds it's not a seed because it's a root a vegetable is part of a plant I think we've got some broccoli here you know what part of the plant a broccoli is it's a flower the broccoli is a flower the carrot is a root a kiwi is it a fruit or a vegetable it's going to be green yummy K let's see it's a fruit [Music] let's gather our scraps for the farmer's compost [Music] pile wow what I'd really like to know about now it's compost I hear a lot about it but I'd like to know why is it important and how do you do it it's important because we want to reduce reuse and recycle how do we do that well remember all the fruits and veggies that you guys ate today well we dump them into this bin just like that we mix it up with a little water and a little sunshine turns into fertilizer compost is a natural fertilizer made from leftover fruits and vegetables leaves and brown paper compost helps plants grow stronger and healthier it's like recycling food maybe we can take a look at what it looks when it's ready to be fertilizer fantastic okay follow you want to see yeah I do too come on well we've had some great experiences we went to the market and we picked out fruits and vegetables and we saw what's a fruit and what's a vegetable and now now we're going to learn how to grow fruits and vegetables can you tell us about it sure all you need is a little bit of soil a little sunshine some water and some seeds wonderful and I see that you don't really have to have a lot of land to grow a garden you can do it in a small pot or even a swimming pool at your school or as big as you want would we like to add a little soil yes let's add some we have to mix it up really good because we need the dry soil and the wet soil to mix up ready mixing mixing mixing mixing would you like to grow some bean plants okay let's grow some bean plants here we go first we need good rich soil then we need [Music] seeds pokea f in the soil and plant your seed you can plant seed leans too seed lanss are seeds that have already begun to grow carefully make room in the soil and gently Pat it in then water and watch them grow with a little bit of seeds and soil and some sunshine and some water water we were able to plant our [Music] garden part of a plant they can be Roots like a carrot or flowers like broccoli what was that word vegetables good [Music] job welcome back cision kids we learned that healthy food grows from plants and we need to eat healthy foods to grow strong do you know that fruits and vegetables are available and many different forms sometimes we can't get them fresh so canned Frozen and dried fruits and vegetables are healthy too let's take a look and look at the different forms they come in fresh fruits and vegetables are picked right off the plant and ready to eat you might want to wash them up but they are nice they're fresh and they're ready to eat frozen you put in the freezer dried have been put out in the sun and dried out so that they still have all their nutrients but they're good for you to eat like these raisins or dried apple chips canned means that they were put into a can so that they could be shipped different places and kept for a longer period of time so you can buy canned are you ready we're going to play a matching game let's start with corn M nice frh fresh corn it comes fresh it comes Frozen and you can get it in a can and all of these are healthy you can read the ingredients to make sure that just the food that you want is in it try to fuel yourself with some healthy food every day that's what I say oh hi shiny what fruits or veget vegetables do you like the they taught us about all types of different plants and that people need plants even if they want to live in space and we went to a farmers market to find out about healthy plants we can eat right here
