are dedicated to enriching children's lives and empowering them to become responsible and productive adults it's time for a field [Music] trip Mission and shiny too helping friends with what they do we're vision mission with [Music] you learning about martial arts Miss [Music] Penny hi Kid Vision kids welcome to the Kid Vision playroom I'm just preparing for my iido class you see I am a Sensei that means I'm a martial arts teacher martial arts are traditional physical Arts that started thousands of years ago all over the world they teach self-defense Aikido is the Japanese martial art that I know and that I teach it originated in Japan I'm about to try on my brand new ghee I'm so excited it just came from Japan it's what we wear when we practice martial arts this is what we wear on the top before we practice and I put it on I always put left over right I'd like to have my Gees stay closed while I'm training so I have a little tie put on it so that it stays closed and you can see I have my name that says Penny in Japanese and these are my pants they say penny in English it would be P NN y but this is what it looks like in Japanese very exciting oh and let me show you my belt this is not new actually I've had it for a very long time and now we're ready and you you know what do you see my students are ready see how nicely all of my little teddy bears are lined up in my playroom yes they're ready for class we're going to breathe in and then we're going to breathe out so we're going to inhale and then exhale ready inhale and now exhale breathe in breathe out and find your Center we have a phone call let's see who it is it's Peter and iita Sensei we call him Peter Sensei hi Penny Sensei hi Peter Sensei I'm at the dojo and we're having our children's camp today would you like to come by and teach class I would love to teach our camper some iido techniques we are on our way that's great bye come on Kid Vision kids let's learn about martial arts I'm going to invite you to my Dojo to learn about iido it's time for a kid Mission hi Kid Vision kids uhoh something's not quite right that's much better welcome to my iido [Music] Dojo I am a Sensei a Sensei is a teacher a mentor but even more it is someone who is regarded highly for their knowledge and sharing of that knowledge I teach I iido I am an iido Sensei welcome to my Dojo Dojo is a place where people practice martial arts Aikido is a Japanese martial art it's a self-defense that uses throws pins and falling rather than kicking and punching the opponent ends up falling or pinned without harm done to either person come I see Peter bernna since a Peter here let's find out more hi Sensei Peter hi Penny Sensei hello children hi Kid Vision kids Welcome to our dojo we practice Aikido here ad Dojo is a big matted area where you train self-defense Arts it's made up here on the bottom you'll see this green mats they're called tatami mats that's when we practice we can fall down and it's safe because they're made of rubber so it doesn't hurt us this in the front here is called the kamisa and place of honor in the dojo we start and end all of our classes by bowing towards the kamesa we have a picture here of the founder of iido O Sensei are a great teacher and next to that is calligraphy saying the words iido in Japanese the way of Harmony thank you for coming for the class today I'm very pleased to be here I think when we start Aikido or any martial art the first thing we need to do is put on our ghee when we train in iido we wear an iido uniform form our ghee so we have a ghee top ghee bottom you have your Obi which is a belt and I have on a hakama and iido want you to get a black belt to wear a hakama it's a clothing of respect that shows that you have achieved a black belt wearing a black belt signifies that a student has achieved a high level of Competency it takes years of training and testing for a person to obtain a black belt hi shiny would you like to learn how to tie a [Music] belt great job [Music] shiny let's try it first thing you have to do is find the middle of the belt by putting the two ends together and all the way at the bottom here that's the middle I'm going to put the middle right below my belly button bring it around the back until I have two pieces out front then I cross one piece over then I go through the front and up through two pieces of the belt I pull it a little bit tight and then I just tie it like I would a shoelace we're all ready for class let's do [Music] it when entering or leaving a dojo when entering or leaving the mat and at the beginning and end end of a class students and teachers bow to 's photograph it is a sign of respect for the man that created iido and the space where it is [Music] [Music] practiced when we bow in we all say please because we're asking someone to please teach us how do you say please in Japanese onashas can you say onashas onim great that's a very good job would you like to join our class please do remember in iido there's throws and falling and pins first technique we're going to do is he's going to grab my shoulder what am I going to do it's he's pull I'm going to step back my hand comes over the top and I'm using my body to turn here put my hand down and out and this is called a pen okay let's try that everyone take your partner please [Music] this is Helen Sensei a fourth degree black [Music] belt next technique this time we're going to do a throw and a fall a forward roll so he's grabbing my shoulders I'm gonna move one shoulder up one hand down on his elbows tank on and throw remember braido is all about timing too when we're practicing we're going slow I'm practicing elbows are in control tank on out of the way give him some place to throw see rolling is really important when you're doing iido because it's part of our process when you do iido you either fall on your belly you fall on your back and get up or you do a forward roll so you make yourself a circle who would like to demonstrate a forward roll please nice job again please so you make yourself a circle so that it's easy to take the fall otherwise when you fall down what would happen you'd get hurt and iido it's all about harmonizing someone's coming at you and I want them to harmonize with my energy and come down so instead of fighting and kicking and punching if I find myself in a situation I'm moving I'm avoiding leading and avoiding leading and avoiding and that's what iido is all about okay so let's line up please I want to notice that everyone is sitting in seah and sea means that you're knees are bent and you're sitting down this way we always sit in seon the beginning and the end of the class and when a teacher is demonstrating the technique ready [Music] I also want to say that when we bow we bow for respect I'm going to bow to you to show respect you're going to Bow back to me and we're going to say thank you what is the Japanese word for thank you arato Arigato can you say arigato [Music] AR good job there you [Music] got thank you very much now each of you are going to turn and bow to your [Music] partner it's been a wonderful day thank you so much thank you so much sayara that was great kids I really enjoyed you coming to the iido dojo to learn about iido it was really fun and we learned a lot of new words today let's go to the Kid Vision classroom and find out what they are put on your thinking caps it's time to learn a new word ghee a ghee is a Martial Arts uniform it has a Loosely fitting jacket and pants tied at the waist by a cloth belt what was that word g good job Obie an Obie is a cloth belt it is tied around the waist when wearing a ghee what was that word o good job hakama a hakama is a Japanese article of clothing It is worn over a ghee and Aikido is it signifies that the person wearing it is a black belt what was that word hak good job mat a mat is a firm but soft flooring used in martial arts to lessen the impact of falling on the ground what was that word m good [Music] job an important part of martial arts is respect respect is shown by bowing let me please teach you how we bow in iido are you ready yes first you need to take your shoes off when we practice in martial arts we don't wear shoes so that our feet can be firmly planted on the ground and iido we bow standing and sitting so first we'll practice standing stand up straight head up shoulders back hands at your side now we're going to lean forward forward from our waist and put our head down ready if I'm bowing to someone who is a higher rank than I am or or who I have great respect for I bow with my head down so they see the top of my head and then I bow up if I'm bowing to a friend I bow with my eyes so that we can see each other and say thank you are you ready let's bow to each other bow good job I respect you and you respect me good job Kid Vision kids keep up the good work there's still more to learn about martial arts let's keep going it's time for Aion mission [Music] [Applause] [Music] hi I'm Miss Penny and these are the K Vision kids and we're here today to find out about the Chinese New Year great you guys are in the right place I'm seu Joe and this is some of my team of lion dance and Kung Fu performers I have with me Christopher hi okay Logan hello and Tristan yeah so we've been pretty busy getting ready for Chinese New Year um I don't know if you guys know but the Chinese New Year doesn't follow the same calendar that ours follows follows the lunar calendar so the the full moon the cycle of the moon China is a large country in Asia the Chinese New Year is the most important celebration the Chinese New Year follows the cycle of the moon so it starts on a different day each year there are 12 animals in the Chinese calendar each year symbolizes a different animal dog Pig rat Ox tiger rabbit dragon snake horse goat monkey why do they do the the lion dance what's the purpose of it well it's really to bring good luck bring good luck and scare away any evil spirits you know uh they say that thousands of years ago a village was terrorized by some really evil type of lions and they tried to get rid of them and they couldn't so the only way they could do it is by dressing up like lions and using loud music and firecrackers to scare them away lion dancing is traditionally practiced and performed by people who practice the art of kung fu which is a Chinese martial art the reason why is the lion dancing requires very strong performers have to have really good strong legs strong movements all right so Penny are you in the kids ready to learn some lion dancing yes awesome awesome all right guys so before we do the lion dance we're going to work on some stances to really build up our legs okay Kung Fu we have to start with the basics put your hands on your waist okay take a step open with both feet have your toes parallel to each other bend the knees so that your knees over your feet and your butt tucked in everybody repeat after to me say ping ma sa this is the square horse stance now straighten out the right leg keep the left knee bent feet flat flat repeat after me kma the bow and arrow stance okay let's go back to horse and then all the way to the right side say kma good that's the bow and arrow stance excellent so now take your right foot go behind the left bend the knee touching the the outside of your leg say LMA La that's twist stance very good step the left foot behind say laama very good now we're going to see those stances in the routine okay so let's start you can grab your bags put your right foot forward and bow and arrow stance we're going to hold the head up in front of the forehead you don't want to go too high all right this first movement is called see everything where the lion looks around so shake the head to the left shake the head to the right back to the left very good now everybody horse dance now we're going to do the walking okay B stance to the left pull the head down bow stance to the right and step pull the head down each time we step we make it very strong very powerful and step now we'll step backwards step back with the right foot step back good step back good step back good step back all right and we got one more step that we're going to do today so let's do horse dance this is the happy so from here horse feet together horse feet together one more time horse feet together we lift the head up high okay right foot goes forward we smell to the right smell to the left smell to the center the head comes down right foot steps over the left doing a Twist dance look to the front and then step back and pull the head down very good everybody so let's try that with the music [Music] good now horse dance here we go for the [Music] walking good now horse dance and let's do the happy [Music] dance oh awesome everybody good job this is the time you guys all been waiting for the actual lion so you guys already know has eyes has ears has its horn but what we don't see is the stuff on the inside and if you guys take a look inside here we have all these inner workings that are really tied together they look like little bamboo shoots you see it and if you look deep in there this little pulley systems that way we have some rope tied together here what we can do while we're in inside is pull and look what happens eyes and ear yeah the eyes and ears move so this all helps the lion look real like a real lion so you guys all want to try yeah [Music] awesome let's do horse Dan let's look left blink the eyes blink blink blink Pull the Rope good really hard good look to the right blink the eyes blink blink blink very good all right horse St open them out all right let's put the feet together lift the head up and close them out yeah down open them out and up close them out very good one more time down up close them out good horse Dan blink the eyes look left good blink the eyes look right very good good job you guys are ready to join the team before the Lions do their performance the animal must be blessed by by an eye dotting Ceremony this is done to awaken the spirit of the lion and give it [Music] life the Lions bow respectfully to the altar before they begin their dance [Music] [Music] the Happy Buddha helps guide the Lions during their dance [Music] [Music] the red envelopes are symbols of good luck and have money inside we feed the Lions for Good Fortune [Music] [Music] bonoo sun in F all right everybody clap good job happy New Year put on your thinking caps it's time to learn a new word Chinese calendar there are 12 animals in the Chinese calendar each year is symbolized by a different animal what was that word Chinese calender good job Chinese New Year a festival marking the start of the new year it is celebrated by visits to family friends and special meals what was that word Chinese New Year good job kung fu kung fu is a Chinese martial art what was that word Kung Fu good job lion dance the lion dance is a traditional Chinese dance performed for good luck on big occasions especially the Chinese New Year what was that word lion dance good [Music] job learning about martial arts can be really fun but remember to always get an adult supervision before practicing martial arts I have an idea to learn more about martial arts let's practice some of the stances we saw during the field trip let's begin with a square horse dance do it with me stand up straight shoulders back put your hands on your waist now step open with both feet so you have a good solid stance bend your knees over your feet tuck in your butt and look at that you're doing the Kung Fu horse dance you want to feel nice and balanced and your center right over your body good job now let's do the bow and arrow stance you can do it with me we get in the Square horse stance and now turn to one side I'm going to bend my front knee straighten my back knee hands still on my waist shoulders up and back and feel balanced and centered that's the bow and arrow stance let's try the other side start with the horse stance tucked in good posture turn to the other side knee bent back knee straight good posture hands on your waist look at that you did it you did kung fu great job learning about martial arts is fun and I want to thank my class look at them all sitting so nicely and so disciplined they're paying attention and they're being very good students very proud of them thank you hooray everyone that's a mission accomplish good job I'm very proud of you but we've made a mess martial artists keep everything nice and clean let's get busy [Music] on this kid vision mission we learned about martial arts from two different countries Aikido from Japan and Kung Fu from China they are both practiced
