Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship[Music] hi friends I'm Miss Penny and today I'm at a Brazilian festival to learn about Brazil come [Music] on Brazil is a large country in South America it is home to the Amazon forest people in Brazil speak a language called [Applause] Portuguese soccer is a very popular sport in Brazil in soccer two teams try to kick a ball into the other team's goal to score a point but you can't touch the ball with your hands you can only use your feet knees chest and head to move the ball people in Brazil and other parts of the world don't call it soccer what do you call soccer in Brazil we say fball oh fball fball that's great yes [Mus.. playing soccer has made me hungry we're eating traditional Brazilian food can you tell us about it all right this right here is the kosas this is traditional kosa made with chicken and cheese Kiti cheese kosa is a yummy Brazilian snack that's shaped like a teardrop it's crispy on the outside and filled with soft creamy chicken or other fillings on the inside everybody loves kosa if you have a party if you have a birthday party if you have a wedding Kos is the number one thing to go with I flipped over kosas while some of my new friends flipped while doing a martial art called capoa capoa is a really cool Brazilian sport that mixes dancing and martial arts people move their bodies to music while doing flips and kicks and Acrobat ICS I had a chance to try capoeta it's a lot of fun but it takes a lot of practice to be good at it capoa was created by enslaved African people in Brazil hundreds of years ago they weren't allowed to practice fighting or self-defense so they disguised their martial arts training as dancing music is an important part of capoa capoa there is a lot of culture in it it's a game as much as it is a martial arts so in the game uh musical instruments like you see here and what uh right next to me is essential to uh that dictates the different games in Capa this is the atabaki atabaki it might be uh other other people might call it a Conga but this is an an African instrument tell us about this instrument it's very what about the parts of it we'll break it down so this is the bid and bow an African instrument that was brought over to Brazil and this is dictate dictates the games as I was telling you earlier so tell me about way into your holiday so this is called theago go and you use metal stick and [Music] you that's right that's why we're on students right we're about learning tell me about what you have this is the F and it has be [Music] like that's great do you ever play all together all these instruments at the same time you do would it be possible to do that yes sure so there's an order for how these instruments are played okay so this is you can say this is I'm the quarterback right now I I dictate and followed up Olivia is going to be on the drum here atabaki next up is going to be little man on the BTO and afterwards it's going to be K here on Ako so one at a time let me play a little bit Olivia's going to go little man and uh then K ready team [Music] then with this we have some singing I don't think for today but there's a singing that stand [Music] can sing with [Music] me ready [Music] [Applause] I [Music] [Applause] I perfect awesome thank you thank you so much there's other stylized fighting dancing done with sticks that's often presented along with capoa we are at the Brazilian festival and I have these two lovely ladies that are going to show me how to dance and play with these sticks what are these okay so these are Ms and this dance is a traditional Brazilian dance it usually is paired with Capa it comes from when the African slaves were brought to Brazil and same as capoa um it was a way for them to to practice defending themselves but it was hidden in a dance so the way it goes when you're going to learn it is it goes in beats a four so you're going to hit on the one so it goes 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 there are there are moves that are traditional and then there are moves that everybody does freestyle moves so as long as you hit on the one all the time you're okay are you guys ready so I'm going to do the count okay step fourward can we go one 2 3 four you can hit down one two three 4 One Two 3 4 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 see a natural one [Music] 1 I had so much fun at the Brazilian festival learning about this amazing country of Brazil
