Contaminants from abandoned coal mines are being captured and filtered out of Pennsylvania's streams at treatment systems like this one throughout the coal region. Mine water is diverted into man-made ponds. The minerals oxidize, and settle to the bottom, allowing clean water to exit the other side. But once these minerals are collected, then what?
